de Tichborne, Lady Mabella: The wife of Sir Roger de Tichborne, she was reputedly a witch. When she was forced by her husband to crawl around fields on the estate, she cursed the family, then died. Her ghost is said to haunt Tichborne House. BS
de Tichborne, Roger: The son of Walter de Tichborne, Roger inherited the estate in the mid-tenth century. He was a soldier, womaniser, and brute. Married to Lady Mabella, he forced her, while she was sick with a wasting disease, to crawl around fields in order to mark out the amount of grain that should be, at her behest, donated to the poor. Oliphant, Lawrence : A successful lawyer, journalist, author and economist, Oliphant also became the leader of the Rakes after the death of Henry Beresford in 1859. He later overindulged in an opium den and almost died, but was rescued by Eugenicists. Nurse Florence Nightingale saved the functioning parts of his brain by fusing them with his humanised pet white panther. BS

Oxford, Edward: Born in 1822, the son of a brutal alcoholic, and with madness running in his family, Oxford began to lose his mind after being accosted by Spring Heeled Jack. He started working as a barman, a job he was very good at, but became increasingly insane after Lucy Scales was attacked by the stilt man around the corner from the pub where he worked. Forming the idea that he must be remembered throughout history, he purchased a couple of pistols and, in 1840, set off for Green Park, intent on assassinating the Queen. BS

Spruce, Richard: A botanist, member of the Royal Geographical Society, and a Eugenicist. He is the author of The Hepaticae of the Amazon and the Andes of Peru and Ecuador. When Spruce works with the Eugenicists to solve the Irish famine, he accidentally covers the entire island in carnivorous plants, causing thousands of deaths and a mass exodus. This leads, via political manoeuvring, to Britain's involvement with the American Civil War. Spruce is blamed and leads a mass defection of Eugenicists to Prussia. BS
Stanley, Henry Morton: A journalist with The Empire newspaper, Stanley claims to be American but is thought to be Welsh. He initially supported Speke when the latter clashed with Burton after their African expedition. Later, though, he took a more balanced view, probably to curry favour with Sir Roderick Murchison. When his newspaper financed an expedition to solve the Nile problem, Stanley was chosen to lead it. He and the entire expedition vanished in Central Africa. BS
Stark, Clarissa: The daughter of servants at Hufferton Hall, she later became sexton and companion to the Rev. Aiden Fleischer. Hunchbacked, crippled, and extremely sensitive to light, she is forced to wear dark lensed goggles at all times. RS
Steephill, Desmond: Married to Lizzie Fraser and father to Marian, Steephill was poisoned to death by his wife. BS
Steephill (nee Fraser), Lizzie: Daughter of Edwin and May Fraser, Lizzie experienced a mental breakdown at the age of fourteen and is suspected to have been one of Spring Heeled Jack's victims. She later married Desmond Steephill and had a daughter, Marian. Tichborne, Sir Alfred: The younger of two sons, he took over the Tichborne estate when his brother, Sir Roger, was lost at sea. A gambler and wastrel, Alfred was ill-suited to his position, and almost ran the estate into the ground. BS
Tichborne, Sir Henry: The seventh baronet and the first Tichborne to stop the traditional dole and thus incur Lady Mabella Tichborne's curse. He fathered seven sons, including James and Edward. BS
Tichborne, Sir James: Sir Henry's third son. He married Henriette-Felicité, and was father to Roger and Alfred. He became the ninth baronet but died within days, passing the title to his eldest son. BS
Tichborne, Sir Roger Charles Doughty: Heir to the Tichborne estate, he was educated at Stonyhurst Jesuit School, then joined the Sixth Dragoon Guards and served in Ireland. He was romantically linked to his cousin, Kattie Doughty, but this ended when he was lost at sea while sailing from South America. He reappeared ten years later to claim the family estate. BS
